A retired carpenter in Fair Oaks, California. I spent forty years reading the grain of walnut and oak, and twenty learning how a drop of pigment reads it back. This is the little shop of my hands — build a board, then paint what the board remembers.
Watercolor doesn't fight the wood — it follows the grain. A wash laid over a sanded board finds every growth ring like a river finding its bed. My pages teach that patience: how to build the easel that holds the board, and how to mix the pigment that befriends it.
Los Guías & el Ensayo — the pages
-
An essay on the shared discipline — reading a board's growth rings exactly as you read a sheet's tooth, and letting the material finish the sentence.
-
A beginner's walk through a basho-style H-frame easel in poplar and oak — cut list, joinery, finish — with the patience of a man who's screwed up his share of miters.
-
A practical reference — earth vs. mineral, dye load, binder ratios — for the palette that lives in a carpenter's head: ochre, sienna, umber, and one drop of blue.
-
A slow-cooked pork field guide from the kitchen of the shop — pick the shoulder like a board, read the fat like grain, and let the pot finish the sentence.
El Corto — the film
Grain & Wash: The Carpenter's Watercolor — a short meditation watching pigment follow grain.
En estos maderos — in these boards
“A ledger balances the week; the grain balances a life. Every board I ever cut is still in here, and every wash still settles where the river went.”
